Get Cosy: Winter-Proof Your Home With The Latest Decorating Trends And Heating Solutions

April 16, 2024 - 4 min read

The nights are drawing in. There’s a sharp bite in the air. Hello, Winter. You make us want to put our key in the door and escape to a warm and snug sanctuary. “Cosy is a look as much as a feeling,” says Melbourne interior designer Camilla Molders of Camilla Molders Design.  “When I think of cosy, it’s being wrapped up on a gorgeous, comfy sofa, inside a soft cashmere throw, with bright textiles all around me.” Get cosy with the latest winter décor trends and heating solutions to get you toasty in no time.

Make Your Lounge A Winter Retreat

“Winter’s not just about hibernation; it’s great to have décor that makes you feel energised, too,” says Camilla. Think about adding burnt orange pillows to your sofa, or introducing a giant ottoman centre-stage in an eclectic, textured fabric. “Always go for a mix of patterns and textiles for more visual depth.” Dark cabinetry is another excellent cosy choice – but keep it sleek and streamlined so the room doesn’t feel too heavy. And don’t forget to factor in your heating needs!

Warm Up With Colour

Cold weather is the perfect cue for bold and bright hues to invigorate your core living spaces. That doesn’t mean splurging on a new red sofa though! “Cushions and throws will give you winter-defying colour pops and are the quickest and easiest ways to change your home’s vibe,” says Camilla. On-trend colours that feel naturally cosy are dark red, orange, pink or peacock blue, she suggests. When painting walls (or using wallpaper), do the whole room, not just a feature wall. “It creates a better overall balance and immerses you in a cocoon-like space.”

Get Touchy-Feely With Textiles

“When I’m decorating for a winter-inspired look, I close my eyes and think about what ’cosy’ should feel like,” says Camilla. “To me, that means high-pile wool rugs to sink your toes into, luxurious sofa throws for evenings, and upholstered kitchen stools that are actually comfy enough to relax on.” So, what are the latest textile trends for creating those cosy winter vibes? “Go for slubbed velvet, chenille and boucle yarns, which have more loops than regular yarns,” says Camilla.

Cosy Up In The Bedroom

Now to the most important room in your winter-cosy design. Invest in luscious bed linens, says Camilla. “Bamboo sheets are the softest I’ve ever slept on and so delicious to get into in winter.” Got a spacious master bedroom? Create a snug reading nook with a window seat clad in a sensuous fabric such as alpaca velvet, suggests Camilla. Get a electric blanket for your bed.

Cue Cosy Lighting

Soft lighting and cosy go together like wine and cheese, so get smart with your lighting. “Lamps are a simple way to instantly create a cosy mood. A podium lamp can dramatically alter any space,” says Camilla. “Make sure to go for warm, gentle-light bulbs – I’d recommend around 3,000-3,500K. Consider feature lighting to amplify your wintery textiles by showcasing their rich textures.”

Create A Winter Garden

Make like the Europeans and extend your celebration of cosy outside. Create a winter relaxation space with a fire pit, indoor or outdoor heater such as the Goldair 2400W Upright Radiant Heater.
