Trade Secrets: “The Home Office Tech I Cannot Live Without”

December 12, 2023 – 3 min read

Hybrid working is here to stay, and with many of us now spending a lot more time toiling away at home, it’s important that your home office has everything you need to get the job done. A quality computer, monitor and printer will not only make you more productive and efficient, but will also ensure your workspace is comfortable and ergonomic. Adios, back pain and eye strain!

“The home office has become an increasingly important space in many homes – mine included,” says Jason Tavoletti, The Good Guys Buyer – Tech. “When you’re spending hours sitting in front of a computer, it’s worth investing in the right tech and equipment to make all those work tasks easier and more manageable.”

Time to upgrade your home office? The first step is to update your laptop or desktop computer, monitor, printer, and headphones to ensure you have the best tech available to streamline your workday.

Here are Jason’s top home office ideas for creating the workspace of your dreams, plus the home office tech that he personally wouldn’t be without!

The Best Laptop For The Home Office

“To easily pivot between working in the office and working remotely, a laptop is definitely the way to go,” says Jason. “This is why choosing a computer with all the next-gen features is so important. Personally, I love a two-in-one laptop, which serves as both a computer and a tablet; and having a touchscreen can make things easier when you’re on the go.”

If you like to multi-task and often have dozens of tabs and programs open at once, you’ll need at least a Core i5 processor.

“To ensure your computer runs fast and smoothly, 8GB memory and at least 120GB SSD storage space will do the trick,” says Jason.

The Best Desktop Computer For The Home Office

If you’d prefer a more permanent set-up with a bigger screen and more storage space and memory, a desktop computer could be the way to go.

“I find sitting at my desktop computer more ergonomic, especially when I’m working for long periods of time,” says Jason. “The bigger screen is easier on my eyes, and the separate keyboard and mouse are more comfortable for my hands and wrists.”

Because they are larger than laptops, desktop computers also tend to have more power and memory, as well as better graphics cards, at a lower price point. Plus, they can easily be adapted to meet your specific needs.

The Best Computer Monitor For The Home Office

“While a laptop offers the convenience of workplace flexibility, the small screen can make things challenging if you’re looking at, say, spreadsheets all day, so I recommend adding a separate computer monitor to your workstation,” says Jason.

Consider the size of the space you’re working in and what you’re using the monitor for. For general tasks such as sending emails and creating spreadsheets, a basic 24-inch computer monitor will do nicely; for more image-driven work such as graphic design, you’ll want at least a 27-inch monitor with QHD or 4K resolution and a fast response rate.

If you're after a more immersive experience, choose a curved monitor rather than a flat screen. Curved models also help to reduce eye strain – another factor worth considering when weighing up your computer monitor options.

The Best Printer For The Home Office

“Even though we do a lot of work digitally these days, there are times when you do need to print, scan or copy documents; and having a multipurpose printer in your home office will come in handy,” says Jason.

But which is the best home printer for you? Laser printers are great for those who print mostly in black and white and text-only documents. While these printers can cost more than an inkjet model initially, they are more economical in terms of ongoing ink costs.

For colour printing, the quality of inkjet printers takes the crown. They also tend to be more compact, which may be preferable if space is tight.

The Best Headphones For The Home Office

According to The Good Guys’ resident sound guru, Christos Boukogiannis, the top home office accessory everybody needs is a good set of headphones. “When I’m working from home, I spend a lot of time in virtual meetings or on the phone,” says Christos. “That’s why I’m a big fan of noise cancelling headphones as they not only block out distractions, but also make it easier to concentrate.”

Over-ear noise cancelling headphones, in particular, are super comfortable to wear all day. And because they block out external noise, you can keep the volume down, which helps to protect your hearing.
