Find Your Fit: How To Measure The Size Of A TV

September 23, 2024 - 5 min read

Nothing beats pulling back the plastic on a shiny new TV screen, plugging it in and kicking back for epic movie nights, supersized gaming and sports with big-stadium vibes. But the thrill is short-lived if your new TV doesn’t fit on your living room console or looks too small wall-mounted in your bedroom. So what are the important TV sizes and measurements to know before bringing a new screen home? We sat down with The Good Guys resident TV expert John Milonas to break it all down.

“Doing your homework is essential before investing in a new TV, and that absolutely includes pulling out a tape measure to work out how much space you have to play with,” says John Milonas, The Good Guys Buyer – Televisions. “You’ll save yourself time, energy and money if you commit to finding your perfect-fit TV the first time, and you might even discover you can go bigger than you thought possible.”

So, dig out that tape measure – here are the essential measurements to find the perfect-sized screen for your home.

What sizes do TVs come in?

At The Good Guys, you can find feature-packed TVs ranging in sizes from a compact 24 inches (perfect in your home gym) right up to a colossal 100 inches (hello, home theatre hero!).

“Traditionally, the sweet spot for size and affordability has been TVs between 60 and 75 inches, but we’re certainly seeing a shift towards even larger screens now,” says John Milonas.

“As TV technology becomes more refined and the demand for larger sizes continues to grow, you can expect more and more big brands to produce screens bigger than 100 inches.”

How do you measure the size of a TV screen?

The measurement you see listed in a TV’s product name refers to the length of the screen, in inches, running diagonally from corner to corner. So, that means the measurement does not include the frame or bezel that surrounds the screen.

It’s also important to know the total width and height of a TV screen (we measure these TV sizes in cm) to make sure it fits where you want it to go - check our the table below for approximate measurements. You’ll find those specific measurements on our website's product pages or you can also chat with our team in-store to get an expert opinion.

Watching the footy on your mate’s new 75-inch smart television may have made for a fun night, but don’t assume his set-up will work for your space. That’s because every room is unique. So, to find the perfect-sized TV for your space, consider the room’s layout, the distance between your couch and the screen (referred to as the viewing distance), and the screen resolution of the model you’re considering.

“The higher the definition of a TV, the larger the screen you can comfortably watch because there are more pixels per inch. That means a sharper image, so you can sit closer to a bigger 4K TV than you ever could to a Full HD TV,” says John Milonas.

Big-screen TV sizes

If you’re looking to create a cinematic, big-screen experience at home, TV sizes above 85 inches will fill more of your field of vision for the striking impact you want from the latest blockbusters. Because of their immense size, these screens are best suited to your home cinema or living room (for wow factor, try a lifestyle TV that displays art or photos on screen).

Mid-size TVs

As TVs continue to get bigger, 60- to 75-inch sets – the best-selling sizes in Australia – are now considered a mid-size screen. These TVs deliver premium viewing without becoming the central focus of a space. This means they can live happily in virtually any room in your home.

Small-screen TV sizes

TV screens around 32 to 47 inches might be small but they still pack plenty of punch. Usually more budget-friendly, and still delivering on picture quality and essential features, their more compact size makes them ideal for bedrooms, kitchens and home gyms where you might want to catch the morning headlines while you get ready for the day.
