Laundry Renovations: Top Trends And Appliances

January 2, 2024 - 5 min read

It’s one of the hardest-working rooms in the home and now the laundry is also one of the smartest. And that’s good news if you’re looking for both a feature-packed washing machine and dryer that do all the thinking (and program selection and detergent dosing) so you don’t have to!

To get the scoop on what’s hot in laundry design and appliances for 2024, we sat down with Peter Simic, The Good Guys Buyer – Laundry; and Alisa Fraser, celebrated interior designer and ambassador for Kinsman, the leading Australian-owned kitchen and laundry manufacturer.

So, stop scrubbing and start planning your dream laundry!

Clothes-Loving Appliances

New washing machines and dryers are designed to protect your clothes, ensuring you’ll get many more wears out of that old band T-shirt or pair of jeans. Look for fabric-loving features such as auto dosing, where the correct amount of detergent is automatically applied to each wash; and Steam Refresh, which de-wrinkles barely worn garments in minutes (no need for a full wash).
Heat pump dryers will also remain hot tickets for 2023 and beyond. They are gentler on clothes than traditional vented dryers and use up to 50 per cent less energy, which spells big savings on your power bill,” says Peter Simic.

Mudrooms Are Big!

The 2022 season of The Block introduced us to mudrooms and now we all want one! Traditionally, mudrooms are a space between the back door and the main part of the house, where you can remove and store items such as wet coats, hats, schoolbags and shoes.
Placing your mudroom in the same space as your laundry is a great design choice, says Kinsman ambassador Alisa Fraser.
“Combining your laundry and mudroom will ensure that the mess, dirt, mud and sand are kept out of the rest of your home. Clothing can be put straight into the washing machine, while dirty shoes can be rinsed in the sink; and bags, coats and sports gear can all be stored together, keeping your home clean,” says Alisa Fraser.

Natural Textures

When it comes to the overall look of your laundry, Kinsman’s Alisa Fraser says it’s all about embracing organic, natural finishes.

“Just because laundries are a utilitarian room doesn’t mean that they can’t be stylish and a joy to be in!” says Alisa Fraser.
“Play with texture and tone with your joinery and benchtops to produce a natural colour palette. Brass handles and taps will add a pop of sparkle, while open timber-look shelving will add the perfect amount of warmth.”

Looking for laundry appliances that complement natural stone and timber? You can’t go wrong with classic stainless steel finishes.

A New Way To Dry

Another clever new laundry trend, a drying cabinet is the perfect solution for those items that are too delicate to throw in a dryer but need help to dry faster (think business suit jackets).

It offers a range of heat settings, so you can tailor the cabinet to whatever it is you need to dry; plus, you can hang your items while they dry, which means less ironing later.
“Just remember, as with all laundry appliances, a laundry cabinet is something you’ll need to factor in at the design stage to ensure it fits in your layout,” says Peter Simic.

Energy Efficiency Is Everything

With the rising cost of living, investing in  energy efficient appliances is the smart move to save on power bills. In 2023, the most wanted washer and dryers will also be the most energy efficient. When shopping for new appliances, take note of the energy rating sticker – the more stars, the more you’ll save. Simple as that.

Smarter Storage

Streamline laundry operations in 2023 with a reno that helps you declutter with increased storage!

“Kinsman laundry hampers make light work of sorting clothing, while our range of wire pull-out shelving and accessories will help you keep the space neat and tidy, which is especially important when space is tight,” says Alisa Fraser.

Another way to make the most of a smaller space is to opt for a compact washer-dryer combo, or the innovative LG WashTower – a full-size stacked washer and dryer with the footprint of a single appliance.
