When it comes to small appliances, there’s a clear pecking order in kitchens that dictates which appliances go on show and which ones get stored behind closed doors (or in the butler’s pantry). Baking buffs will want their cake mixer on permanent display, while caffeine addicts need their coffee machine within easy reach.
“Having clever storage solutions for all your small appliances can really make or break a kitchen design and help you enjoy your kitchen time more. So, it’s vital to factor in this element and not just focus on the big-ticket items,” says Kinsman ambassador and interior designer Lysandra Fraser.
Here’s the definitive guide to storing your small appliances.

These mini kitchens aren’t just a crafty place to stash dirty dishes while you’re entertaining, they’re also storage heaven for slow cookers, stand mixers, microwaves and toasters. Why? Because all those open shelves make it easy to store, remove and replace appliances on demand. A few well-placed power points will also allow you to use appliances in situ, for the ultimate convenience.

We all know the value of full-extension drawers in base cabinets – perfect for plates, glassware, crockery and, of course, your endless supply of Tupperware. But drawers can also be a tidy and easy-to-access solution for small appliances.
“Create a bank of deep drawers beneath your cooktop and oven – or integrate them into your island bench – and you can index all your small appliances in separate spaces for easy access,” suggests Lysandra Fraser.
Deep drawers are perfect for small appliances that you don’t use daily but want to keep at close range, like sandwich presses, electric woks and stick mixers.
Want to free up bench space for easier meal prep? Integrate core appliances such as your coffee machine or microwave into your cabinetry for a stunning and seamless storage remedy. Or consider an appliance garage – a hidden nook with power sockets and pull-down door – to magic away off-duty appliances such as your toaster and kettle.

We all have that one (or maybe three) small appliances that are simply too gorgeous to park in the pantry. So, if space allows, give them a permanent home on your benchtop!
