December 14, 2023 - 5 min read

Skip the drive-thru, delete Uber Eats and prepare for your bank account to thank you, because we’re going to tell you how you can make all your favourite fast food recipes at home.  A few genius small appliances is all it takes. With a benchtop or in-oven air fryer on standby for fried chicken, fish and chips or kebabs, you’ll never have to order out again.

These are the simple, tasty fakeaway recipes you’ve been waiting for!

“If you’re looking for a healthier and cheaper alternative to getting takeaway meals, an air fryer is the answer,” says Tracey Ellis, The Good Guys Buyer – Portable Appliances.

“If that’s not reason enough, you can often cook your food in less time than it takes the delivery driver to arrive – and it’s fresh!”

If you thought fast food couldn’t be more convenient, our MVP of benchtop appliances, the air fryer, is here to prove you wrong. After all, what could be faster than a meal coming from your very own kitchen? And, best of all, delivery won’t cost a thing.

Here are eight fun fakeaway air fryer ideas to get you started.

#1 Fried Chicken

Fried chicken is a fan favourite in the world of fast food. Whether in a burger or flying solo, you’ll find it on top of many a takeaway menu. Follow this fried chicken recipe from Philips to make your own mouth-watering drumsticks and impress the crowd at home.

Air Fryer Chip-Crusted Chicken Drumstick Pops

Preparation time: 20 mins

Cooking time: 20 mins

Serves: 4

  • 8 chicken drumsticks
  • ¼ cup whole egg mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 cups cheese corn chips (about 60g)
  • 2 cups deli-style salt and vinegar potato chips (about 50g)
  • ¼ cup plain flour
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  1. With a small, sharp knife and/or a pair of kitchen scissors (whichever you’re most comfortable using), cut around the bone end of each drumstick, at the thinnest part, cutting all the way through the skin, meat and tendon layers until you come to the bone. Discard any loose white tendons. Set aside.
  2. Combine mayonnaise and mustard in a bowl.
  3. Place chips in separate zip-lock bags, then crush until coarse crumbs form. Transfer to separate plates.
  4. Put chicken in a large bowl or tray. Sprinkle flour over the top and toss to coat.
  5. Brush mayonnaise mixture generously over the large, meaty end of each drumstick.
  6. One at a time, firmly press 4 drumsticks in the corn chip crumbs until well coated, shaking off excess. Repeat with remaining drumsticks in the potato chip crumbs.
  7. Place drumsticks in a single layer (as much as possible) in the basket of the Philips Air Fryer XXL 5000 Series. Sprinkle chicken with a little paprika.
  8. Set temperature to 190°C and time to 20 minutes, air frying until chicken is cooked through and crumb coating is golden. Serve immediately.

#2 Burgers

In the world of takeaway, the burger is king. Make your meat patties as usual, place them in a single layer in the air fryer, cook for about 9–12 minutes at 190°C, flipping after 5 minutes, then slap on a slice of cheese and cook for another minute. Add the patty to lettuce, onions, tomatoes and pickles on a bun. Now who’s the burger king?!

#3 French Fries

Next in line to the throne is the humble French fry – great in partnership but just as impressive when flying solo. To whip up a batch of fries, all you need to do is cut a potato into thin, even sticks, and toss them in olive oil and salt. Place potato sticks in a single layer in your air fryer and cook on 195°C for 12–15 minutes (turning over halfway) until golden brown and crispy. Viva la French fry!

“Who doesn’t love a burger and fries? Once you’ve tried making them with your air fryer at home, you’ll never look back. They’re healthier, cheaper and taste so much better!” Tracey Ellis, The Good Guys Buyer – Portable Appliances

#4 Pizza

The Italian favourite is made for air fryers, whether benchtop or in a next-gen (and more spacious) oven that features an air frying setting. Begin by pre-cooking the crust for a few minutes at 190°C, then add the toppings straight onto the base in the air fryer. If using an oven, you can assemble your pizza all at once. You can’t go wrong with a simple combo of tomato paste, buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil and tomato, but feel free to mix it up with all your favourite ingredients. Cook for a further 7 minutes or until the cheese has melted and the crust is golden brown.

#5 Potstickers

In the mood for Chinese? These potstickers will hit the spot. Make the filling by combining shiitake mushrooms, minced pork, diced cabbage and chives, then place spoonfuls on pre-bought dumpling wrappers and pinch edges together to seal. Cook at 190°C for about 7 minutes in your air fryer and serve with soy sauce. Warning: Once you have one, you won’t be able to stop.

#6 Quesadillas

They’re so simple you’ll be able to make them with your eyes closed (piñata style!). Grab a tortilla and add some refried beans, fried vegies, rotisserie chicken and shredded cheddar cheese on top. Fold over and cook in the air fryer at 180°C for 8 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the tortilla is crisp. Olé!

#7 Fish And Chips

We’ve already covered the chips (aka French fries) above, so all you need to do is add the fish. Select a white fish of your choosing, cut it into similar sized strips, then coat each piece in flour, egg and breadcrumbs. Spray with olive oil, place in an air fryer and cook for 10–12 minutes at 200°C. They’ll be the healthiest fish and chips you’ve ever had!

#8 Chicken Kebabs

Prepare kebabs as normal (thread alternating marinated chicken cubes and vegies onto skewers) then place the kebabs, spaced out, in an air fryer set at 175°C. Cook for 7–9 minutes, turning over at the halfway point, until cooked through.
