A new microwave can open up a world of cooking possibilities. One of the most important things to consider when buying a microwave is how you’re going to use it. There are two main types to choose from, convection and conventional. Let’s take a look at what they do to get you reheating leftovers or roasting family meals in no time.
Convection microwave ovens combine a small oven and a microwave in one unit. Unlike conventional microwaves, they can bake and roast dishes with a crispy finish, just like an oven. They can also heat foods or liquids quickly in the same way as a conventional microwave.
There are lots of benefits to owning a convection microwave, the main one being they provide a second oven in your kitchen. This comes in handy at Christmas time or when you’re entertaining throughout the year and need the extra space for cooking or keeping food warm. Due to their smaller size, they also cook food faster and save energy.
In small apartments or camper vans where a full-size oven isn’t needed, convection microwaves offer a great space-saving solution. “A convection microwave offers great value and can even negate the need for a separate oven,” Nick Trajkovski, Microwave buyer at The Good Guys.
Multiple functions make it a lot easier to choose the right setting to cook delicious meals every time. The Panasonic 27L 4-in-1 Flatbed Convection Oven is a convection oven, grill and microwave in one. Along with multiple functions, it has a 27-litre capacity and Flatbed technology, eliminating the need for a conventional turntable.
Meanwhile, the Breville 32L the Combi Wave 3 in 1 Convection Oven incorporates Microwave, Oven and AirFry functionality into one machine, ensuring efficient cooking times and use of benchtop space. One our amazing customers even gave it a five-star review - “Just what I needed for my small kitchen - 3 products in one that fits perfectly in the microwave alcove.”
Convection microwaves come in both benchtop and built-in models. They range in price starting from around $379. Just remember, professional installation is required for built-in units.
If you love your oven and stove top, and only use your microwave for basic heating, cooking, defrosting or melting purposes, a conventional microwave could be for you. An affordable option, they are also portable, meaning you can take them with you if you decide to move.
Microwaves have been a kitchen staple for decades. They’re an essential tool, providing speed and convenience for your everyday cooking needs. “Making everything from scratch or heating food using more traditional cooking methods can be time consuming and at odds with modern busy lifestyles,” says Nick Trajkovski.
A conventional microwave with inverter technology will provide a steady supply of power to your unit and heat food more evenly. The Panasonic 27L Flatbed Inverter Microwave is a top seller and is approved by Canstar.
For even faster cooking times, the LG NeoChef Inverter Microwave includes 1200 watts of power. It was awarded Best Brand of Microwaves by Choice and given a five-star review by The Good Guys customer, Priscilla. “I love this microwave. It is SO simple to use Love the dial, the door opens without button, and it's a mirror!” she says.
Conventional microwaves with a lower wattage start around $99, while inverter models begin at $179.
While you can certainly do more with a convection microwave, there is little advantage to paying extra money for something you’ll never use. “It all comes down to preference and what you’ll be doing with it,” says Nick Trajkovski.
