A butter board is exactly what it sounds like – a timber board topped with a generous amount of butter and served with artisanal breads. Whipped fresh, highly photogenic (Insta and TikTok feeds are full of butter boards) and topped with exotic ingredients, these butters are a taste sensation that relies only on your imagination and a small appliance or two. From dessert butter to savoury blends, we’ve rounded up the best butter board recipe ideas for you to try, plus the best appliances for the job.
It’s time to get out the stand mixer and gather your toppings!
Like any good food trend, a TikTok butter board will easily impress and is even easier to prepare. In a world where “assembling” is the new way of cooking, everyone is jumping on the butter board bandwagon.
Simply grab a board, lather on butter, add an imaginative mix of toppings, and serve with freshly cut bread. Job done! Guests can dip their bread or spread the butter blend on their slice, from what is essentially an oversized and very fancy dip platter.
The real appeal is in the DIY butter, so ensure your stand mixer is up for the task. While stick and hand mixers can get the job done, a stand mixer has the power to whip through large batches of butter for that perfect fluffy finish.

Whip two sticks of butter plus lemon zest and salt to taste, then top with some sweet extras. Add dollops of fig preserve plus bite-sized pieces of fresh fig; drizzle with honey. Complete this sweet and zesty board with some crushed walnuts and bright edible flowers.
Turn your garlic bread gourmet with a garlic butter board! Season butter with herbs and garlic, then whip up in the mixer. Top with bacon bits and salt flakes for a spread that looks as good as it tastes. Serve with warm baguette slices.

Nail the butter board trend with this recipe from KitchenAid and create your own butter from scratch with the KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer Blue Salt COTY – with 10 speed settings and suitable attachments, it’ll quickly turn your DIY butter dreams into a tasty reality.
Preparation time: 20 mins Makes 1 cup of butter and 1 cup of buttermilk.
Ingredients: 570ml heavy cream (38% fat content) Cold water
To garnish: 1 sprig each of thyme, dill and flat-leaf parsley 3 tbsp edible flower petals of your choice 1 green onion, bias-sliced 1/2 tsp sea salt flakes 1/4 tsp toasted and cracked coriander seeds Pinch of cracked red peppercorns
Method: 1. Pour cream into the bowl of your stand mixer with whip attached. Begin beating cream at Speed 1, gradually increasing to Speed 10 as the mixture thickens. After several minutes, whipped cream will form. Continue mixing. 2. After several more minutes, the fat solids will separate from the liquid and you'll see clumps of butter fat begin to form, leaving liquid buttermilk in the bottom of the bowl. If liquid begins to splatter, use a pouring shield or lay a small towel over the top of the stand mixer. 3. Strain fat solids from the buttermilk using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth placed over a bowl to catch the buttermilk. Return fat solids to the stand mixer bowl without the buttermilk and whip at Speed 10 again. You may be able to squeeze a bit more buttermilk out. 4. Scrape butter out of the whip and place in the strainer. Pour cold water over butter to rinse away any remaining buttermilk. Discard water and rinse butter twice more. You now have spreadable, unsalted butter ready to be garnished. 5. Roughly tear herb leaves and flower petals into small pieces. Remove any stalks and sepals. 6. Spread butter on a timber board and sprinkle with herbs, flowers, onion slices and seasonings. Serve with bread or crackers.
