What Is The Perfect Sleeping Temperature?

According to the World Health Organisation, sleep is one of the three key pillars of good health, along with good nutrition and exercise.

Deb Herdman, an Australian sleep expert from sleep solutions company Nigh Nigh, agrees. “There is nothing better than a good night's sleep,” says Deb. “When you're tired, it can be hard to eat well and get moving, so quality sleep can help you live a longer, healthier, happier life.”

One of Deb’s top sleeping tips is to either heat or cool your bedroom to 17℃ for a dream sleep.

“Our circadian rhythm is our sleep timekeeper. In each 24-hour sleep-wake cycle, cooler temperatures signal sleep and warmer temperatures signal waking. So, to have the best chance of staying asleep, a cooler temperature is better,” says Deb.

A reverse cycle air conditioner is the do-it-all appliance that can maintain that magic 17℃ in any weather or season. Designed to heat in winter and cool in summer, the latest reverse cycle split systems also include air-purification filters for dust- and allergen-free dozing.

The best reverse cycle air conditioners are Wi-Fi-connected, allowing you to ready your bedroom for a blissful slumber with the tap of an app on your smartphone.

“If you’re using air conditioning on a nightly basis, then a system with good energy efficiency is vital to keep electricity bills under control. The Energy Rating Label is a great guide to calculate running costs before buying,” says Scott Bazley, The Good Guys Buyer – Seasonal.

Heating Options For The Best Sleep Temperature In Winter

Depending on where you live, a heater or an electric blanket might be just the thing to take the extra chill out of cold nights and boost bedroom temps to the ideal degree.

These days, electric blankets come with auto cut-off safety features and many are even machine washable. Choose your favourite hot spot with feet-only warmth or full-body settings.

“If you’re inclined to feel the cold, textiles or materials that hold heat like the ‘teddy bear’ fabrics are great as sheeting, doona covers and for sleeping in,” suggests Deb Herdman from Nigh Nigh.

Cooling Options For The Best Sleep Temperature In Summer

If it’s just summer that creates a bedtime battle, opt for split system air conditioning or cooling only air conditioners for simple climate control. It might be that you only need a good pedestal or ceiling fan to knock down the overnight heat.

“For hot and cold sleepers in the same bed, opt for separate doonas of different thicknesses. That way, the cooler sleeper can flick off the covers without disturbing their sleeping partner,” says Deb.
