Gaming Laptops To Give You An Edge!

December 12, 2023 - 4 min read

These days, it feels like almost everyone is a gamer, which is fantastic news because it means there are now more ways to game in more places than ever. The latest powerful, portable laptops make it easy. And with microchip shortages ending and the tech supply chain moving again, now really is the best time to invest in a dedicated gaming laptop to take your gaming set-up to the next level.

What Is A Gaming Laptop?

A gaming laptop is a laptop optimised for gaming, with a dedicated graphics card, powerful processor, lots of RAM, huge emphasis on cooling, and a screen with a high refresh rate. Some also have keyboards with mechanical switches and RBG lighting to properly replicate that home gaming set-up most gamers dream of.

Are Gaming Laptops Worth It?

Absolutely! “For a long time, gaming laptops were more like semi-portable cooktops, in that they were very heavy and got very hot,” says Jason Tavoletti, The Good Guys Buyer – Tech. “However, these days tech companies have cracked the code and worked out how to make thin, light gaming laptops with good heat dissipation, running the best graphics cards.”

Whether a gaming laptop is worth it for you depends on how much you want to streamline your gaming set-up, or game on the go.

Is A Gaming Laptop Better Than A Normal Laptop?

That really depends on what you want the laptop for. “If you want to play games, then yes, a gaming laptop is much, much better than a regular laptop, because a gaming laptop is designed to give you the best graphical experience with the best performance for gaming,” says Jason Tavoletti.

Says award-winning technology journalist, Alice Clarke: “Gaming laptops are also really good for people who do other graphics-heavy activities, like video and photo editing, or running architecture programs.”

But if you just want to check your email and do some online shopping, and don’t play games, a gaming laptop could be overkill.

What Features Should I Look For In A Gaming Laptop?

There are many things to consider when buying a gaming laptop, and a lot will come down to your individual needs, but Alice Clarke says there are a few things to keep in mind.
“The laptop’s CPU (central processing unit) and GPU (graphics processing unit) are obviously the two main considerations, and you want the best you can afford with these. But don’t forget the display – size, resolution and refresh rate are key.

“Size comes down to how big and heavy you want the laptop to be,” adds Alice. “But while you would usually prioritise resolution on a TV for daily viewing, the refresh rate will come first for a gaming laptop. The minimum you’ll want is 60Hz, but 144Hz or higher is better.”

Also, consider whether you want the better performance of SSD, or the better-value storage of HDD when it comes to hard drives.
