Revealed! The Best Built-In Appliances For Your Butler’s Pantry

July 4, 2023 – 4 min read

As a handy hide-out for all your beloved small appliances, a butler’s pantry is a home cook’s absolute best friend. But with a little forethought and the right built-in kitchen appliances, it can be so much more than just extra storage space.

“Butler’s pantries are becoming like second kitchens,” says Bronwyn Aldridge, residential design specialist at Bronz Designs & Consultancy.

“The best butler’s pantries are now zoned with a food prep area, a cooking area and a dishwashing area. Having hard-working appliances like dishwashers, microwaves and coffee machines built into your secondary space leaves ample bench space for meal prep while keeping your main kitchen minimalist, with room for entertaining.”

Building your dream home with a bonus butler’s pantry? Planning a kitchen renovation to maximise your space? Here are the top five built-in appliances to create the ultimate, functional butler’s pantry design.

Dish Drawers

Why you want one: “Drawer dishwashers are one of the most popular butler’s pantry inclusions because they can be built into the bench at waist height and slide out like a regular drawer,” says Tania Grillinzoni, The Good Guys Buyer – Cooking and Dishwashers. “They’re super functional in a smaller space where you don’t have room to shuffle around an opened, full-size dishwasher while packing away dishes.”

Got a busy family or love to entertain? Consider the extra capacity of double dish drawers that can fit up to 14 place settings.

Where to put it: Plumbed appliances are best installed closest to the sink. A dish drawer is especially useful when your dinnerware is stored nearby as it makes for an easy workflow.

Built-In Microwave

Why you want one: “Today’s microwave ovens give you all the flexibility of combination cooking, with intuitive settings for reheating, fan-forced convection cooking, grilling, and even steaming in some models,” says Tania Grillinzoni.

“The best thing about a built-in style is you won’t have to deal with the accumulation of dust and food scraps around the machine. And, in a butler’s pantry, you can install it at a useable height without worrying too much about aesthetics.”

A built-in microwave oven is the perfect sidekick to your main oven when you're feeding a crowd. It’s also a great alternative to your oven if you’re whipping up a quick meal for two or simply reheating leftovers.

Where to put it: Practicality is key for microwaves in a butler’s pantry, so find a space that allows easy access, as well as a nearby drop zone so you can transfer hot meals directly onto the bench.

Built-In Coffee Machine

Why you want one: A built-in coffee machine is not only the ultimate space saver, but also brings a touch of sophistication to your butler’s pantry. By installing it into a wall, you win back valuable bench space – perfect for a crowd-pleasing 4-slice toaster so you can create a one-stop breakfast station.

Some built-in models are plumbed, so there’s no need to refill water jugs. On high-end models, virtually every setting is customisable, including temperature, strength, cup size and grind size, so you can create (and save) your perfect coffee type.

Where to put it: “There’s a great sense of pride in having a sexy, built-in coffee machine so if you’re installing one in your butler’s pantry, make it the star feature so it can show off a little,” says Bronwyn Aldridge.

Warming Drawer

Why you want one: Many modern kitchens don’t have the space for a warming drawer but in a butler’s pantry, they can be one of the most helpful built-in appliances. They’ll save the day when you need to keep food warm while you prepare other meal components, or when you want to wow dinner guests with pre-warmed plates (and keep their food hot for longer).

“Look for a warming drawer with a fan to circulate air evenly and you’ve got yourself another handy way to gently defrost meals,” suggests Tania Grillinzoni.

Where to put it: Pop your warming drawer near the microwave oven in the “cooking area” of your butler’s pantry so you can transfer meals between the two effortlessly.
