Ready to take TV shows and movies to epic proportions? Here's what you need to know about 4K projectors.

Completely revolutionising the way you see your favourite content, 4K projectors are your answer to cinematic viewing from the comfort of home. Read on to learn more.

What is a 4K projector? What should I look for in a 4K projector?

A 4K projector offers an Ultra High Definition picture comparable with what you’ll see at a movie theatre. The best 4K projectors on the market will display incredible images with brilliant colours.

When looking for a 4K projector, there are a few things to consider as not all projectors are made the same.

Most 4K projectors will offer you a very high standard of image quality; however it will come down to the aspect ratio the projector offers. Most will have a 16:9 aspect ratio that gives the best image projection. Older models tend to have 4:3 aspect ratios, which means you lose the higher-end resolution quality.

You will need to consider the brightness level of your 4K projector. If you’re setting up your projector in a darkened room, you can buy a projector with around 1000 lumens. However, if you want a premium image or use your projector in an area that can’t be fully darkened, you will want to choose a model that offers around 5000 lumens.

Most 4K projectors will have built-in speakers that give a good quality sound. You can, of course, opt to get a surround sound system if you’re setting up a theatre room.

Which brand is best for 4K projectors?

You’ll find the big brands in the 4K projector world to be Epson, Hisense and Samsung.

The Epson Home Theatre projector is often highly rated by buyers, offering 4K projection with enhanced resolution and image processing. You can project images from 40” to a huge 500”, taking home movie nights to a whole new level.

Hisense offers cinematic 4K projectors with their latest model using ultra short throw laser beams to project the perfect image to an included 120” screen. The sound is created by Dolby Atmos, making you feel like you’re in a movie theatre.

Samsung has a range of smart projectors, with their top model offering premium triple laser technology to project incredible visual brightness and clarity onto an area of up to 130” without the need for a screen. The Filmmaker Mode cinematic viewing plus the built-in audio will have you believing you’re in the middle of the action.

The Hisense and Samsung 4K projectors have built-in apps so you can connect to the internet to stream your favourite Netflix TV show or the big game to some of the largest projection scales possible. You can even watch live TV as the smart platform for these brands works much the same way as their 4K TVs.

Is a 4K projector worth it?

If you want a big screen experience in your home that’s portable and transportable, then it’s definitely worth buying a 4K projector.

One of the main attractions of a 4K projector is that you don’t need to purchase a big screen TV that takes up loads of room in your lounge room.

By using a 4K projector, you can watch movies, TV shows, sporting events, or play online games on a large scale in any room of the house. You can either project it onto a bright white wall, get a projector screen (pull down, permanent or portable – it’s your choice) - or in the case of the Hisense 4K projectors - these come with a screen included.

It’s really a case of ‘is bigger any better’ when weighing up a 4K TV or a 4K projector. Or you can always have both!

If you’re after the occasional (or every day if you choose) super large screen experience (up to 500”), then you will need to buy a 4K projector as TVs aren’t made that size.

A 4K projector offers superior image, contrast and picture details when compared to a 1080p projector.

What else do I need with my 4K projector? Do I need a 4K projector screen?

For the best image projection, you’ll want to use a screen. Some projector screens are made with ambient light reflecting materials and come in a range of sizes to suit your projector, from 60” to 120”. You can choose if it’s a permanent screen (ideal for home theatre rooms), a pull down or a portable screen.

Most projectors will have built-in sound that is fine to use on its own. However, you’ll win extra points if you add a home theatre system to give your family the true movie experience.

Hint: if you don’t want to be running wires everywhere, you can go all out and upgrade to a wireless theatre system. That’s perfection!

You’ll also need to consider how to watch movies, TV shows or sports through your projector. Smart projectors are the best in that you can stream YouTube and subscription streaming apps like Netflix, Disney Plus and more from the device itself.

If you don’t have a smart projector, you’ll need to connect devices (phones, computers, Blu-rays etc.) using HDMI cables or Google Chromecast.
