Looking to keep your family safe and home secure? Here’s what you need to know.

From baby monitoring to recording pets, Security Cameras are great for a variety of tasks. We answer some frequently asked questions about Security Cameras to help out.

How do wireless Security Cameras work?

Wireless Security Cameras connect with each other via a Wi-Fi connection and share a video feed with other devices connected to the network. Many wireless Security Cameras can connect to the internet, making their video feed accessible remotely for any devices with the right login details and an internet connection.

Many modern wireless Security Cameras have Smart Home capabilities so they can be controlled and programmed remotely from a PC, Smartphone or Smart Home Hub. Models with motion sensors can be programmed to send alerts when they detect movement and a prompt to check the feed. Connecting to devices like a Smart Speaker or Hubs that have digital virtual assistants allow control and access to cameras using voice commands.

In addition to Home Security, wireless Security Cameras can be used to monitor a sleeping baby, keep an eye on kids, check in on pets and see who’s at the door before answering.

Does Home Security need WiFi?

Most wireless security cameras on the market today can be connected to the internet and Wi-Fi networks. An internet connection is essential for many convenient features that wireless cameras have, such as live streaming, remote access, cloud storage and sending notifications. If you don’t mind losing these features, there are some cameras that do not require an internet connection and will save recorded video locally to a micro-SD card. Some cameras without Wi-Fi can be set up for remote control, remote feed access and notifications, but will require a data plan like your mobile phone.

Security cameras without Wi-Fi have some other advantages. If you do not have a strong, stable Wi-Fi connection from where you want to position the camera, then a non-Wi-Fi model might be preferrable. Adding another device to a home network could slow down the internet for other connected devices. Many cameras without Wi-Fi are still wireless, making them just as easy to install as Wi-Fi enabled models.

How do I install Security Cameras?

Completely wire-free cameras are the easiest models to install and set up. These models not only connect wirelessly for control and sharing the video feed but they are also powered from rechargeable batteries. This means they do not have to be plugged in to an available power outlet or hardwire them in. Wire-free Security Cameras are small, discreet and can be installed or relocated wherever needed provided they get a good Wi-Fi signal.

If a Wi-Fi signal is not available or it's preferred to keep a camera and home Networking separate, there are Cameras that can be used over a mobile phone network instead. Some wireless Security Cameras can be hard-wired into the mains power at home, a great option for recording high quality video without the need for frequent recharging but makes moving them after installation much more difficult. This kind of camera installation needs to be carried out by a licensed electrician.

What features should I look for in a Security Camera?

When deciding on a new wireless Security Camera consider the features of both the hardware and software.

A camera with an infrared LED will provide good night vision video while ultra high 4K resolution camera models are available for clarity and details. Be aware that higher quality video is more demanding on internet bandwidth and may need to be plugged in or hardwired, and also takes up more memory than lower quality footage.

Models with a built-in microphone and speaker are great for baby monitoring. Battery powered models provide easy installation and can be relocated as needed. To extend the battery life, these models generally sacrifice video quality.

When considering software, investigate whether the video feed can be accessed via an app or web browser. Does the software allow control of the camera remotely or is it just for viewing? Some cameras will allow manual panning, tilting and zoom. Some models may require a paid subscription for live streaming or using cloud storage.
