Diffusers do more than just help rooms smell nice, they can also be highly therapeutic. From essential oils to pet safety, here’s everything to know to get started.
Diffusers warm up infused oils or waters and release breathable molecules into the air. Once in the air, the essential oils are subtly absorbed through breathing and smell pleasant plus can aid the body too.
Different essential oils can be added to the Diffuser for different benefits. For example, eucalyptus oil can help clear sinuses and airways and counteract allergies or cold symptoms. Lavender oil can promote relaxation and sleep, whilst basil oil can aid with digestion or alleviates muscle aches.
There are four main types of oil Diffusers that use different techniques to aerosolize essential oils. Evaporative Diffusers use a small fan to evaporate the oil. Humidifying or Ultrasonic Diffusers create a fine mist through vibration. Nebulizing models use pressurized air to diffuse the oil and Heat Diffusers use the heat released from candles, lamp rings or electric heating elements to turn the oil to gas.
Whilst Diffusers themselves are generally safe, some essential oils can be toxic to pets.
In general, cat owners should avoid using citrus, oregano, thyme, wintergreen, sweet birch, pennyroyal, cinnamon, clove, peppermint, ylang ylang, eucalyptus, bergamot and tea tree (melaleuca) oils.
Dog owners should avoid pennyroyal, peppermint, cinnamon, wintergreen, pine, thyme, sweet birch, tea tree (melaleuca), anise, clove, ylang ylang and juniper oils. Please note that these examples are not comprehensive and we always recommend checking with a vet before use.
Cats and dogs both have heightened senses of smell over humans, so even a non-toxic essential oil can become overwhelming to them. Depending on the behaviour and temperament of pets, you may need to supervise them around a Diffuser. Heat Diffusers can be easy to be knocked over posing a fire risk.
