Wine Fridges are stylish and perfectly crafted to make cellaring a wine collection easy. Whether you are a practiced expert or a beginner collector, here’s what you need to know about Wine Fridges.
Wine Fridges are specially designed to maintain an optimal storage environment for both immediate consumption and long-term wine storage within a temperature range unique to them. Whether you’re a connoisseur or simply someone that can appreciate a nice bottle of wine, you may have considered collecting and aging some bottles. Many wines develop a smoother, rounder, gentler and more mature flavour profile over time if properly stored. A dry environment will dehydrate the cork and risk breaking the seal on a bottle of wine, light and vibrations also negatively impact wines. Wine Fridges are designed to control these factors so a wine collection will age beautifully. Traditionally, a wine cellar is a temperature-controlled room designed to maintain ideal conditions for long-term wine storage. Some of the latest wine cabinets are designed to mimic wine cellars. There are ideal temperatures, humidity and other environmental factors that allow a wine to smoothly age its flavour profile without being ruined.
Wine Fridges are designed to keep reds and whites in optimal condition for maximum drinking enjoyment or for cellaring, allowing the right environment in which quality reds and vintage whites can develop to their full potential. Beers are best kept in either a Bar Fridge or a Beverage Centre like from Vintec that can store up to 100 bottles. They’re great for entertaining and keeping all types of icy cold beers on hand at temperatures as low as 2°C. Beverage Centres are designed to hold more than just beer too, making them a versatile hub for various refreshments. While white wines can be stored in Beverage Centres, Wine Fridges are purely for either or both reds or whites and serve a very specific purpose with their temperature ranges, some having insulated side panels, specially treated glass doors, as well as wooden shelves that prevent vibration to maintain the integrity of the bottles.
Wine Fridges (also known as a Cellar), offer a temperature range of around 6 to 18°C. For red wines, you’d be looking at storing these at the upper temp range and whites at the opposite for perfectly chilled Riesling or Sparkling wine. Cellaring requires a different temperature again and only a wine fridge can offer that perfectly controlled environment. While you can only store one type of red or white wine in a single zone Wine Cabinet, you can store both in a dual zone Wine Cabinet from brands like Vintec or LG to keep Proseco chilled at one temperature and Pinot Noirs maintained at another, or cellar each at different temperatures so good wines can get better with time. Find capacities ranging from 30 bottles in Hisense Wine Fridges right through to a massive 170 bottles in Vintec’s range. Either way they're perfect for maintaining a consistent temperature so wine tastes the way it should all year round.
The running cost of a Wine Fridge varies depending on the size and model as well as how many bottles of wine it stores. Whilst it has to remain always on to effectively preserve, the good news is that the running cost of a Wine Fridge is substantially less than other Fridges. Wine Fridges are generally more energy efficient than Fridges because they do not need to be anywhere near as cold, as wine fridges are designed to maintain a stable temperature in the range of 6 - 18 degrees celsius for optimal storage. A standard household fridge needs to maintain a temperature of around 4°C to keep food fresh, requiring much more energy. Most fridges also have a Freezer compartment which is even more energy intensive. A larger Wine Fridge will use more power overall but the more bottles of wine stored, the less each individual bottle costs to store.
These six tips will show you how to get the most out of your wine fridge.
