Quick tips for choosing an energy efficient dryer

Dryer Energy Efficient

Choosing the most energy efficient dryer

There are many factors to consider when purchasing a new clothes dryer, our quick tips can help you find the right dryer for your laundry. If you consider energy efficient models, you can end up saving money on the running costs of your dryer.

Energy Rating

Look for the energy star rating – the stars illustrate energy efficiency.
More stars = more savings!

Sensors

Sensor technology stops the dryer as soon as clothes are dry to save energy and reduce clothing wear and tear caused by over-drying. A temperature sensor results in an energy saving of about 10% and a moisture sensor about 15% compared to drying using a timer.

Type of Dryer

Heat pump dryers are highly efficient – using less than half the energy of a conventional electric clothes dryer. Heat pump dryers are cheaper to run so they’re worth spending a bit more on – especially if you use the dryer a lot. A standard electric 5kg dryer used daily uses about 1500kWh per year and costs about $340 to run – a heat pump dryer costs about one-third as much.

Off-Peak Power Prices

Dyers with a Delay Start feature and quiet cycles can be run at night during off-peak electricity times to save energy.

Filter

Emptying the lint filter after each load ensures energy efficiency so easy access is important.

Combo Washers-Dryers

Combination washer-dryers are great for saving space in an apartment with one machine instead of two. Keep in mind that a drying load can only be about half the size of a wash. Beware of washer-dryers that use water in the drying phase to cool the drum and condense evaporated water – they can use more water for drying than washing.

Remember

Dryers are one of the most expensive appliances to operate so energy efficiency is extremely important.

Did you know?

Dryers use a lot of energy – about 6% of a home's electricity usage.

Remember

Dyers with a Delay Start feature and quiet cycles can be run at night during off-peak electricity times to save energy

Did you know?

Moist air can be expelled outside using a venting kit or open window

Remember

There are two dryer costs – the purchase price and running cost over time

Did you know?

Residual heat makes it energy efficient to do two loads in a row

Remember

Keeping the area around your dryer ventilated minimises humidity

Did you know?

Externally venting the dryer removes moist air and channels it outside

Remember

Put your dryer in a heated area – working harder in the cold wastes energy

Did you know?

Dryer overloading or over-drying clothes wastes energy and increases bills

Remember

Spin-dry your clothes in the washer first – never put wet clothes in the dryer

Did you know?

The lint filter must be emptied after each load for dryer efficiency and safety

Remember

You save more energy overall doing fewer full loads than many small loads

Did you know?

Running the dryer on medium uses less energy and is easier on your clothes

Remember

Don’t mix heavy and lightweight fabrics together in the same load
