Choosing the most energy
efficient Dryer

There are many things to consider when purchasing a new dryer. Here are the top considerations you need to know if you're looking for an energy efficient dryer to help you save on running costs.

Energy Rating

When shopping for a new dryer for your home, be sure to check the energy star rating before making a purchase. More stars mean higher energy efficiency which can help you save on overall running costs in the long run.

Sensor

Smart sensor technology stops the dryer as soon as clothes are dry to help save energy and reduce clothing wear and tear caused by over-drying. A temperature sensor results in an energy saving of about 10% and a moisture sensor about 15% compared to drying using a timer1. If your dryer doesn't have auto-sensing technology, use your dryer efficiently by only drying full loads.

Off-peak times

A delay start feature on a dryer is a huge plus. Many energy providers offer lower rates during off-peak hours (late nights or early mornings). The delay start allows you to schedule your dryer to run during these times, helping reduce your energy bill. If you have a busy schedule, a delayed start means you can load the dryer when it’s convenient for you, then set it to start later so clothes are ready when you are. Perfect for when you’re out of the house or busy with other tasks.

Filter

Emptying the lint filter in your dryer after each use is crucial for safety, efficiency, and the longevity of the appliance. A clean lint filter creates proper airflow, enabling the dryer to work effectively. By maintaining good airflow, the dryer will use less energy to dry clothes, helping you save on utility bills.

Considerations when choosing
an energy efficient dryer

Heat pump

Heat pump dryers are highly efficient – usually using less than half the energy of a conventional electric clothes dryer. Heat pump dryers are cheaper to run so they’re worth spending a bit more on – especially if you use the dryer a lot. Since they don’t release hot air, heat pump dryers won’t increase room temperature or humidity, making them suitable for most enclosed spaces.

Condenser

Condenser dryers work by condensing moisture from the exhaust air and collecting or draining it away. Though they have a longer drying time, condenser dryers are gentler on your clothes and are quieter than standard vented dryers.

Combination washer-dryers

Combination washer-dryers are great for saving space in an apartment with one machine instead of two. They are great for individuals or small households who don’t need to wash and dry large loads regularly. Most models use less water than traditional washers and often recycle heat during the drying process, helping reduce energy consumption.

What is a star rating?

The star rating is about energy efficiency – that is, how much energy a product uses compared to similar products. More stars means more efficient, when compared to other models of a similar size and features. The more stars shown on the Energy Rating Label, the less energy the product will use and the more money you will save on your energy bills.

Most products are given between 1 and 6 stars. Technology keeps getting better as does energy efficiency! This is why nowadays you’ll see some super-efficient models in shops and online with an extra row for stars that go up to 10. How to read the zoned
energy rating label

In Australia, clothes dryers are required to meet Minimum Energy Performance Standards and must carry an Energy Rating Label. The more stars, the more energy efficient. Estimated annual energy use in kilowatt hours (kWh) is displayed on the middle of the label.

FAQs

What is a heat pump dryer?

Heat pump dryers use smart technology to heat and reuse air to dry clothes. They are typically more expensive than standard electric dryers, but they are much more energy efficient as they capture and reuse heat energy.

What is a vented dryer?

Vented dryers are the simplest and often cheapest types of dryers. However, they are more expensive to run. They dry clothes by heating air and expelling it into the surrounding space. Therefore, they are required to directly discharge to outside air or via a shaft or duct.

What is a condenser dryer?

Condenser dryers are typically suited to larger laundries, as they are generally heavier and larger than standard dryers. They work by using an in-built heat exchanger to take steam produced during the drying process and turn it back into water. Once cooled, this water can then be recycled.
