Back in the 1950s – when The Good Guys first appeared – Australia was marking a lot of firsts. Australia’s first digital computer was publicly demonstrated in 1951. The CSIRAC was roughly the size of a bedroom, and it was the first digital computer in the world to play music. It had no operating system, and its internal memory could only hold 768 words, roughly the length of this article.

In less than a century, we’ve gone from massive machines that couldn’t do much, to iPads that can entertain children with every cartoon ever made. It was machines like the CSIRAC that paved the way for Fitbits, laptops, tablets, smartphones and the internet. So now, we all have our own computers.

As The Good Guys celebrate 70 years of helping Australians pay less every day, we ponder what’s next in family-friendly tech.

Hybrid working is here to stay, and with many of us now spending a lot more time toiling away at home, it’s important that your home office has everything you need to get the job done. A quality computer, monitor and printer will not only make you more productive and efficient, but will also ensure your workspace is comfortable and ergonomic. Adios, back pain and eye strain!

“The home office has become an increasingly important space in many homes – mine included,” says Erem Karabadjak, The Good Guys Buyer – Tech. “When you’re spending hours sitting in front of a computer, it’s worth investing in the right tech and equipment to make all those work tasks easier and more manageable.”

Time to upgrade your home office? The first step is to update your laptop or desktop computer, monitor, printer, and headphones to ensure you have the best tech available to streamline your workday.

No room at home to set up a productive home office? Then it’s time to section off space in your garage and equip it with the tech you need to succeed. Residential design specialist Bronwyn Aldridge says homeowners are increasingly looking to their garages to transform underutilised space into functional (and fancy!) real estate.

Working or studying from home is a regular fixture in many people’s week, so they’re looking at their homes very differently,”  Bronwyn says. “If you’ve got a two-car garage and only one car, or a carport outside, it’s a no-brainer to use that extra space for a home office.”

Ready to kick your garage into high gear as a humming home office? Find helpful home office ideas in our ultimate home office set-up guide, then read on for everything you need to know about perfecting your Wi-Fi set-up, nailing your home office tech and furniture, and creating a space you’ll love spending time in.
