Washer Dryer Combos have earnt their place in Aussie homes due to their space saving versatility. Read on to see if some of their other features can be of benefit to your Laundry.
Essentially, these Combos are a Front Load Washing Machine and Dryer in a single appliance, perfect for when you need both but your current space may not allow for it. Even if you do have the space, you may opt for a Combo Washer Dryer if you only need a dryer on poor weather days or you can’t wait around for items to dry on an airer.
Their wash capacity is greater than their drying capacity, starting off as low as 7kg wash & 4kg dry to a 10kg wash & 6kg drying capacity. You can go from wash to dry in one continuous cycle as both Washing and Drying capacities are based on dry garments and clothing, just don't fill the drum to the brim. Of course there's always the option to use Wash or Drying programs independently.
Washer Dryer combos generally have one drum, or they can be a stacked unit like the LG WashTower with a separate 17kg Washer and 10kg Dryer contained within one seamless unit.
First consider the wash capacity: as a general rule, 7.5 to 8.5kg should be enough for 3-4 people or choose 9kg and higher for households of 5 plus people. Just remember, you can’t Wash and Dry the same load equally in a Combination Washer Dryer, as the Dry capacity is always less due to needing air movement through the tumbling action.
As far as the Dryer goes, this is usually a Condenser Dryer which takes the moisture collected during Drying and condenses into water to avoid needing to vent the washer dryer outside, but make sure it’s in a well ventilated room. Some newer models utilise Heat Pump technology for lower energy consumption and better Drying performance.
Some popular Dryer Washer Combos also include Automatic Dosing of detergent, built-in Wi-Fi to download additional cycles or to troubleshoot, Express, Steam Wash and Dry, Allergy reduction programs and more. Similar to a Front Load Washer, you’d operate a Washer Dryer Combo by filling the detergent drawer with Laundry Liquid or Powder Detergent suitable for a Front Loader, selecting a program and then options for perfecting the wash and/or dry.
All Washer Dryers have lots of continuous cycles that go from Wash to Dry, with the option to Wash or Dry only for any of these. When using Wash and Dry or Dry Only cycles, stick to the recommended load size to ensure a thorough result.
Other options include Dryness levels, Prewash for improved stain removal, low or high temperatures and spin speeds - we recommend the maximum speed to shorten Drying time. Be sure to check out the user manual for handy tips like running a regular cleaning cycle to keep it in tip top shape.
Depending on how many loads you Wash and Dry in a week, the capacity roughly needed for both and how accommodating your current space is, Washer Dryers can be a good option for households with tight laundry spaces or when a Dryer is only sometimes required.
In a Combo you get all the benefits of a Front Loader, however their Drying performance, energy consumption and Drying time may not be as effective and efficient as a standalone Dryer. When relying regularly on a Washing Machine and Dryer equally, this is a no brainer as you may really need individual appliances to get the job done.
Washer Dryers can be handy for some considering you can wash or dry clothes in separate cycles or go from wet to dry in the one cycle depending on weekly Laundry needs. Some even have a separate wash compartment below the main washer dryer to run a small, delicate load simultaneously for maximum flexibility.
